The Israelization Process of Israeli Ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) Society

Prof. Dr. Kimmy Caplan (Bar-Ilan University)

06.02.2024 um 19:15 Uhr

Israeli Haredi society, approximately 12% of Israeli society, consists of numerous streams, groups and sub-groups, which share a common overall reluctant/ambivalent approach toward Zionism and the State of Israel and segregate themselves from the surrounding society. This manifests itself in several ways, including distinct educational institutions, norms and ways of life, and a strong tendency to live in Haredi cities or neighborhoods. Nevertheless, in last few decades we evidence a process of Israelization within this religiously conservative society, that can be categorized as integration without assimilation. This process is occuring from the grassroots levels of this society, and sheds new light on this society's place within Israeli society.

Kimmy Caplan teaches modern Jewish History at the Israel and Golda Koschitzky Department of Jewish History and Contemporary Jewry at Bar-Ilan University. His scholarly interests include the Jewish Religious History in the nineteenth and twentieth century, with a focus on American Jewish and Israeli societies.
